Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian (El Centro, May 20, 1946), is a singer and actress from the United States with a career spanning five decades. Recognized for helping to spread the concepts of female autonomy and self-invention in the entertainment industry, she is famous for her deep voice and for working in various areas of the media, as well as for constantly reinventing her music and image. All of which earned her the nickname Goddess of Pop.
Cher became famous as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, formed with her husband in 1965, popularizing a soft and unique sound that competed with the British Invasion and Motown Sound. At the same time, she established herself as a solo singer with classics like "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot me Down)", "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady", songs that deal with themes rarely discussed in American popular music. Phill Marder of Goldmine magazine described her as the leader of a movement started in the 1960s that aimed to "expand female rebellion in the world of rock" and as "the prototype of the female rockstar, dictating standards of appearance and attitude." After being considered old-fashioned by a new generation who worshiped drugs, Cher resurfaced as a television star in the 1970s with the smashing success of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and Cher . She launched fashion trends with her extravagant sense of style. After divorcing Sonny in 1975, Cher experimented with various musical styles, including disco music and New Wave, and broke audience records with her fixed show in Las Vegas.
In the early 1980s, Cher debuted on Broadway and was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress for the film Silkwood. In the years that followed, she starred in successful films such as Marks of Destiny , The Witches of Eastwick and Spell of the Moon, for which she won the Oscar for best actress in 1988. At the same time, she earned respect as a rock singer by releasing a series of multi-platinum albums and hits like "I Found Someone" and "If I Could Turn Back Time". In the 1990s, she debuted as a film director in "The Price of a Choice" and launched the biggest musical hit of her career, "Believe", which launched the "Auto-Tune" fashion (or "Cher effect") as an effect vocal. In the 2000s, she embarked on the successful Living Proof: The Farewell Tour and signed a $ 180 million contract to perform for three years at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
According to biographer Mark Bego, "nobody in the history of show business had a career with the magnitude and scope of Cher's [career]. "Only person to have received all these awards, Cher won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, three Golden Globes and the best actress award at the Festival de Cannes: Recognized as one of the most successful artists in history, she has sold over 100 million solo albums and 40 million copies as part of the duo Sonny & Cher. Billboard in each of the past six decades.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything but the Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica. Founded in 1982 by Hull University students Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, the duo took their name from a sign placed in the window of a local furniture shop, which claimed "for your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl." At the time of their formation, both vocalist Thorn and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Watt were already signed independently to the Cherry Red label; Thorn was a member of the sublime Marine Girls, while Watt had issued several solo singles and also collaborated with Robert Wyatt.
